[STEM] The CRV puzzle is solved (plus a Gold Medal! πŸ₯‡)

Hey there!

If you've been following along, you know Mooney and I have been working on solving the CRV puzzle β€” how do you turn a Honda CRV into a comfortable, safe, functional travel setup for a large golden retriever?

Well β€” we figured it out. At least for now.

Here's what the finished solution looks like:

Mooney gets the entire back seat area β€” bridged all the way across to the front seats with a custom-built platform. The key elements came together like this:

  1. Two custom storage containers β€” black marine-grade fabric with corrugated plastic inserts, custom-sized to fit the space between the front seats and bridge the gap. Velcro-closure top panels keep everything tidy and increase structural stability.
  2. A rigid plastic cooler (one we already owned) β€” fills the gap between the seats on the higher section of floor. Zero extra cost.
  3. A teak charcuterie board from Jungle Jim's β€” yes, really. 41" long Γ— 7.75" wide Γ— 0.5" thick. I spotted it on impulse and it turned out to be the perfect structural bridge between the custom storage supports. Sometimes the best engineering solutions come from the most unexpected places!
  4. Blue 1" foam matting β€” cut 8.5" wide Γ— 56" long from two interlocking panels. Cushion for Mooney, breaks apart for storage when needed.
  5. His chenille dog mat from the Honda Odyssey β€” washable, extra cushion, and he already loves it.
  6. A foam landing pad stored in the cargo area β€” shock absorption for his joints when he jumps out. Because good engineering thinks about the whole journey, not just the ride.

The WeatherTech Pet Panel keeps him safely in the back seat. And Mooney's verdict on his first CRV ride?

Is this the final version? Probably not β€” that's the whole point of rapid prototyping. But it works today, and we learned a lot building it.

In other news β€” big things happening! πŸŽ‰

Literary Titan Gold Medal

I'm absolutely thrilled to share that my first Putney Hicks Inventors Club companion guide just received the Literary Titan Gold Medal!

Here's what Editor in Chief Thomas Anderson had to say:

"It didn't feel like school. It felt like playing and building and figuring things out... I found myself wanting to try some of the challenges myself, and I'm well past the target age group."
"If you're a teacher looking to bring STEM alive or a parent trying to get your child off screens and into the world of building, this book delivers. I'd especially recommend it for girls interested in science. It subtly works to build confidence and independence without making a big deal about it."

That second quote is everything I've been working toward. Thank you, Literary Titan β€” this means the world.

Updated and improved!

I've updated the guide with a new Experiment Summary table (so you can see all 7 experiments at a glance before diving in) plus a handful of typo fixes. The updated version is live on my website and TeachersPayTeachers now.

And if you haven't grabbed it yet β€” the Room Layout Challenge experiment is completely free on TeachersPayTeachers. No catch, no strings. Just real engineering math disguised as a bedroom design project.

Coming up next week β€” STEM Summer Experiments! πŸ§ͺ

Next week I head to Virginia for 10 days of STEM experiments with my great-nephews and a few of their friends. I'll be bringing experiments, cameras, and plenty of curiosity.

Stay tuned β€” I have a feeling there will be foam, fog, and at least one spectacular mess involved.

Until then β€” keep tinkering!

Cheers,

Marsha & Mooney

P.S. I'm also on Pinterest now! Follow along for experiment ideas, free resources, and the occasional photo of Mooney doing something ridiculous. πŸ‘‰https://www.pinterest.com/marshatufft/stem-experiments-for-kids/

Hey there! His name was Tizer β€” and he nearly destroyed our marriage. Not literally. But in 1987, when Stephen and I brought home our first golden retriever, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing. We tried confining him to the downstairs family room with a baby gate. He jumped it and chewed the vertical blinds. Every day we tried to move things out of his way. Every day he found something new. Then one day I came home to find my tube watercolors chewed up, paint smeared all over a...

Here's the thing β€” kids don't resist science. They resist boring science. That's exactly why I wrote the companion guide to The Secret of the Magic eyePadthe way I did. Every experiment connects to a moment in the story, a character choice, a problem worth solving. When kids care about what happens next, they want to ask questions, make predictions, and yes β€” even redo the experiment when their first try doesn't work out. Here's a peek at what makes this guide tick: Curiosity as a habit β€”...

Ethical Use of AI "I apologize for the length of this letter. If I had had more time, it would have been shorter."β€” Mark Twain (Note to self: AI could have shortened this. But would it have gotten the gist right?) It's remarkable how far AI has come in just a few years. It's touching every aspect of our livesβ€”often in ways we don't even see. But here's the question I keep coming back to: Is it doing the right work? The Cheating Problem A friend of mineβ€”a fellow engineer who now teaches at a...
